Most homeowners do not think about attic insulation until the house stops feeling comfortable. The good news is that the signs are easy to spot, and most of them you can check without climbing into the attic at all.
1. The upstairs is always hotter
Some temperature difference between floors is normal, but if the upstairs runs several degrees warmer all summer, heat from the attic is usually the reason. The second floor sits directly under it, and thin insulation lets that heat straight through the ceiling. This is one of the most common complaints we hear in two story homes in Harker Heights and Nolanville.
2. Summer bills keep climbing
If your electric bill rises every summer even though your habits have not changed, the AC may be fighting a losing battle against attic heat. Insulation settles and gets disturbed over time, so an attic that was fine fifteen years ago may not be now.
3. Ceilings feel warm in the afternoon
Put your hand flat on a ceiling in a top floor room late on a hot afternoon. If it feels noticeably warm, heat is coming through. A well insulated ceiling should feel close to room temperature.
4. You can see the tops of the joists
This is the clearest sign of all. Look across the attic floor from the hatch. If the tops of the ceiling joists show above the insulation, you have less than the depth of the joists, which is well below what ENERGY STAR recommends for Central Texas.
5. The insulation looks flat, patchy or dirty
Old insulation compresses and loses value. Gaps open up wherever people have walked, run cable or worked on the AC. Dark streaks on fiberglass often mean air is moving through it, carrying dust from the house below.
6. The house is dusty or drafty
Attic air leaks pull dusty, hot air into the house through gaps around lights, vents and wall tops. If you dust constantly or feel drafts near ceiling fixtures, air sealing and insulation can help.
7. Water stains, pests or a musty smell
These are signs the insulation may be damaged, not just thin. Wet, moldy or pest damaged insulation usually needs to come out before new insulation goes in. See insulation removal and replacement.
What to do next
- One or two signs: check your attic depth. If it is short, a blown in top up is usually the fix.
- Hot upstairs plus ducts in the attic: ask about a radiant barrier or roof deck spray foam.
- Stains, pests or smells: plan for removal first.
